May Day Hat + Basket

by Amy on May 1, 2008

Happy May Day everyone!

I came across this picture from last May – Nat had made this fabulous hat and basket at preschool for May Day.

The hat is quite easy to make: Stack up 3 or 4 large pieces of paper — thin paper left over from a package or newspaper work great. Center the paper on your child head, then form the paper down around your child’s head into a hat. Tape the paper around your child’s head to hold it’s shape. Roll up the brim if you like. Then decorate with paint, glitter, flowers, etc.

For the basket, first decorate your paper plate. Then, cut a slit in the paper plate from the edge to the middle. Form into a cone & staple closed, leaving a small space at the point of the cone for flower stems. Punch holes on opposite sides and make pipe cleaner handles (or ribbon). Add some flowers!

Happy May Day!

Oh, what a flashback! When I saw this photo, it reminded me of a hat I made when I was a little girl, except I used newsprint! What a memory! Thanks for a little trip down memory lane. And happy May Day! :0)
