Exploring Apples

by Amy on September 24, 2009

We have been celebrating the arrival of fall with some fun apple exploration – I love apple season!  We are planning a trip to the apple orchard soon.  In the meantime, here’s what we’ve been up to:

Yesterday, we brought home one of each variety of (organic) apples at the grocery store – nine varieties!  We have been “taste-testing” a few each day and making a chart of our favorites.  Maybe apple pie this weekend?

Of course, I had to pull out my fall books as well.  It’s always a treat to read some of our favorites that have been tucked away since winter.  The girls are loving these apple books right now:

—>By the way, if you are looking for great nonfiction books for kids, I would highly recommend anything by Gail Gibbons. She has books on just about any subject from giant pandas to recycling to ice cream to the post office. Just tons of wonderful information and great illustrations. Fun stuff!

Hope you are enjoying the first days of fall!

I agree that every Gail Gibbons book is excellent. We’ve read a few of them and M absolutely loves them. We haven’t read this one yet, but I just put it on hold at our library! I love the apple and bears weighing activity, and those apple prints turned out great!

Looks like a lot of apple fun. We are doing apples as well. We havent tried the balance with an apple, I think I will try that tomorrow. Thanks for the idea! Awesome pictures!

We’ve been loving apples lately too! We just bought a book named Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington, and it has become a new favorite. It even has recipes at the back for the applesauce and apple cake Annie makes in the book!
