I saw the Line Pattern Leaf project at Art Projects for Kids and thought the girls would enjoy it. They have been enjoying their new black drawing pens, so this activity was perfect!
Supplies: white drawing paper, black pen, leaf tracers (optional – we used leaf shape templates cut from file folders)
The girls and I both spent a long time working on these leaves. It was fun to peek at each other’s papers to get more ideas for patterns!
Here is Delaney’s (age 5) – you can see she did one of her leaves with letters:
Here is Natalie’s (age 6) – she loved doing this so much, she made a patterned willow tree later in the day, too!
Based on the recommendation by Mona Brooks in her popular book Drawing with Children, I purchased Flair black felt pens
for the girls to use. I am loving these pens and so are the girls! They are inexpensive and quick-drying, so we have had no smearing or bleeding when we draw. Love it! We are just starting to do some of the beginning exercises in the Drawing with Children book and I am enjoying learning some drawing skills along with the girls.

This is so cute! Have you seen the most recent Family Fun magazine? The Glue Batik Banner is great…my son and I did them in the last two days (due to the drying time) and they turned out great. These leaf pictures made me think of the project and thought i would encourage you to try it!
Thanks as always for the great ideas…I have used many of them with my kids!
Great idea! Loving the patterns, and great for this time of the year.
I love this great autumn idea! I am also really curious about your black pen recommendation- my four year old daughter is passionate about drawing + art and lately has been obsessed about drawing with black pens. She loves my black Sharpie, but we have had a really hard time with keeping it off the table and with stains. Have you noticed any staining with these pens?
P.S. I love your blog- it is one of my favorites!
