Fairy Tale Book Ornaments

by Amy on December 13, 2009

The girls and I were really excited to participate in the Kids’ Ornament Swap organized by Cassi from The Crafty Crow.  The theme was fairy tales, and after many, many ideas floating around, my girls settled on making a tiny fairy tale book with a sparkling magic wand on the cover.  I think they turned out pretty cute!

We used two pieces of felt, one for the cover and one for the inside pages.  Our cover piece was around 2.25″x4″ (unfolded) and the inside piece was just a little smaller.  We stacked the two pieces, folded them in half like a book, and sewed a seam down the edge on the sewing machine.  This was the girls’ first time using the sewing machine and they loved it – I need to make more time for them to do sewing machine projects!

The covers have hand-stitched wand handles (with colored embroidery floss) and sparkling star buttons.  Really simple to make, but really cute!  Both of my girls are now slightly obsessed with making little felt books.  They have big plans to outfit their American Girls and other dolls with a whole library of books…. :)

Our ornaments were packaged up and sent on their way to five families in Florida, Washington, Texas, Maine, and Massachusetts.  We had such fun making these and sending them off – and, we can’t wait for our ornaments to arrive in the mail!

Have any fun ornament projects to share?  It’s rainy here – we need activities!

Happy playing!

The button wreath ornaments are super cute and fun:http://www.marthastewart.com/article/button-wreath-ornament

My 4 yr old had so much fun with them, and they are fun for adults to make too. Plus they use stuff you might already have around the house, or that can be gotten cheaply and easily at the craft store.

Have fun!

I did an awesome crafty thing with my eldest easlier in the year but its used as a christmas decoration for the tree.
Using a styrofoam ball, we used thin pins and covered the ball in sequins. We attached a ribbon at the top and it looks amazing on the tree!!

Its an activity that takes awhile so its great for rainy weather :)
heres the link to how its done ( scroll down the blog to find the pictures) and a few pics of us starting it.

think your girls will love it!
