My girls love maps – we always have to bring home 2 maps from anywhere we go, so they don’t fight over them! Of course, making maps is fun, too – here are some we have made:
The girls made maps of their bedrooms and we also made maps of one of our favorite places to go – the library! Using my label maker was the highlight of this activity!)
We enjoyed making maps with keys – deciding what symbols to use was very fun!
Natalie also made a very basic coordinate map. First, she drew her map items at intersection points. Then, we took turns giving each other a starting point and directions. For example, “Start at Mermaid Lagoon. Go three spaces up and three spaces left. Where are you?” The next step will be working with numbered coordinates.
Since map-making seems to be an ongoing interest around here, these projects are also on our to-do list:
- Hidden treasure maps
- Salt Dough Maps @ Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers
- My Wonderful World activities (National Geographic)
Are your kids map-lovers, too?
