Playing Rummikub

by Amy on June 18, 2010

When we aren’t playing Scrambled States or UNO Attack!, Rummikub is usually the pick for game time. I loved playing this game with my grandparents when I was younger, so it is extra-special to now play it with my girls.

The basic idea of the game is similar to rummy card games, combining number tiles in runs (consecutive numbers in the same color) or sets (groups of the same number). On the box it says ages 8 and up, but with a little help my girls (ages 5 & 7) were off and running for game play.

While Rummikub can be played very simply, you can also play more strategically by moving tiles around to create new combinations. Adults will find it just as interesting and challenging as the kids will.

I love getting new ideas for games – what are your favorites right now?

Mommy Coddle just did a post about games that has a ton of great ideas. . . check out the comments, too. I now have a ginormous wish list of games for my 5 year old!

This is so funny. We just had dinner over at a friends house last night where my husband and I played this for the first time. It was so much fun, and so challenging!

I used to play Rummikub with my grandparents too! That, and I’d play Gin Rummy with my dad–the card game. I bet my son would love this game. He is 5 also. My dh recently taught him Risk, and he is very into that one.

We love to play Sequence. It’s such an easy game to teach visitors… We play it all the time!
