Each issue of Playful Picks includes links to projects and articles, a peek at what we’re currently reading, and creative products for kids. I’ll also be linking to one or two past posts at Let’s Explore – after 4+ years of blogging, the archives are getting deep around here!
Happy playing!

What We’re Reading
Both of my girls are prolific readers. I used to try to keep up with them, pre-reading books to recommend or reading along in my own copy. Well, I just can’t keep up!
Natalie, my 9-year-old, has been leaving books on my nightstand that she has finished, and thinks I would also enjoy. What fun to get reading recommendations from my girls!
Here are a few recent reads that Natalie has loved:
- Clover Twig and the Magical Cottage by Kaye Umansky
- Philippa Fisher’s Fairy Godsister by Liz Kessler
- Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls series by Meg Cabot
- Half Upon a Time by James Riley
Creative Products
While browsing around on Etsy, I came across an amazing shop, Manzanita Kids. Their shop is described as a developmental toy workshop, and is filled with gorgeous wooden toys.
There are teethers, stackers, and puzzles, but my favorite items are the modular building sets. The modular tree house and castle are so fabulous!
If you’re looking for a special birthday or holiday gift for the littles in your life, I would definitely check out Manzanita Kids.

Thanks for the link love here!! Honored to make such a great list on a great blog!
I love it when my daughter asks me to read books she has read too. She is 10 and her favourites lately have been Wonder by R. J. Palacio, The Tales of Desperaux by Kate DiCamillo, Waiting for Normal by Leslie Connor and The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Of course, any of the Roald Dahl books are wonderful. Matilda and Danny, The Champion of the World being particular favourites that get read over and over. Just in case you were looking for more ideas!
Thank you for sharing your book recommendations! Natalie just had her eye on Matilda at the bookstore – I think she’ll love it. I’m going to share your ideas with her for our next library visit.
I just ordered your recommendations from the library – thanks!
